Physics student is Young Achiever of the Year 2007 26 Sepember 2007 UQ School of Physical Sciences PhD student, Jenny Riesz has been selected as the 2007 Queensland Young Achiever. Physical Sciences research excellence awarded 18 September 2007 Dr Matthew Davis, from the School of Physical Sciences, who has been awarded $60,000 to investigate a new state of matter, a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), to further understand the nature of the universe. His particular interest is how BECs, and especially quantum whirlpools called vortices, form. Hall medal for UQ expert in patterns and combinations 17 August 2007 Dr Darryn Bryant, QEII Research Fellow in Combinatorial Mathematics from the School of Physical Sciences was recently awarded the Hall Medal from the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications (ICA). Physicists shine light on hypersonics problems 26 August 1007 While many researchers hope to see the light at the end of the tunnel, University of Queensland physicists are pioneering techniques to make the light go through it, instead. Dr Margaret Wegener awarded Carrick Citation 10 August 2007 Dr Margaret Wegener has been singled out for exceptional standards of teaching with one of nine Carrick Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning awarded to staff from The University of Queensland. UQ researchers discover some of the oldest forms of life 7 August 2007 A UQ team of researchers, led by the School of Physical Sciences, have identified microbial remains in some of the oldest preserved organic matter on Earth, confirmed to be 3.5 billion years-old. UQ first Australian university to join innovative US science institute 1 June 2007 The University of Queensland is the first Australian university to become a branch member of the International Institute for Complex Adaptive Matter (I2CAM) an innovative US-based research institute. UQ researchers honoured with leading fellowships 22 May 2007 Two current UQ Federation Fellows, Professor Gerard Milburn and Professor John Quiggin, have won second Federation Fellowships in recognition of their exceptional research in the fields of quantum physics (Milburn) and economic risk modelling (Quiggin).
