![]() | 21 April 2008 Researchers from the University of Queensland, in partnership with Queensland Museum, are driving an exciting project designed to generate a new conception of Queensland’s cultural and environmental history. | Rapid Transit in Groups - Finding you way around BS(1,p) This talk is about groups – fundamental mathematical objects that are used in all kinds of places. The problem I am interested in is how to write group elements in the shortest possible way for different groups. Recent work of Miasnikov, Roman’kov, Ushakov and Vershik proved that for so-called free metabelian groups, the problem is NP-hard, meaning just as hard as a load of other hard problems. My talk will consider another type of metabelian group, for which I can solve the problem of finding shortest words in polynomial time. I will explain the groups geometrically, and give an algorithm to compute shortest words. | ||
